The traditional rectangular shape of coffee tables has been reimagined by designer Ayça Sevinç Tatlı with her creation, Catena. Inspired by the desire for a more comfortable and versatile coffee table, Tatlı has designed a unique L-shaped table that allows for easy snacking while sitting on the floor.

The inspiration for Catena came from an aesthetic figure found on a wallpaper - a rectangle with circular edges. This shape became the foundation for each part of the coffee table, resulting in a design that is both visually appealing and functional.

What sets Catena apart from other coffee tables is its composition of four side tables. The unconventional placement of these side tables forms the L shape, creating a distinctive and original form for coffee tables. Each side table is made up of the same rectangular shape with circular edges, but arranged in different combinations to create load-bearing elements.

The manufacturing process of Catena involves the use of wood and hand craftsmanship. The corners of the table are made with flexible plywood, utilizing two different size molds. The result is a sturdy and visually striking coffee table.

With dimensions of 300mm x 1200mm x 380mm/300mm x 900mm x 345mm, Catena is designed to fit seamlessly into any living space. Its compact size allows for easy placement and movement.

Interacting with Catena is effortless. The four side tables can be used individually as side tables, with three of them designed as wheeled-tables for easy mobility. To transform them into a coffee table, the two large side tables are placed side by side, with the wheel-less side table inserted into one of the large side tables. The remaining side tables complete the L shape, creating a functional and stylish coffee table.

Catena has been recognized for its exceptional design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in 2013.
